• BAWAG Group designed tasks for development teams
  • The winning teams received a total of € 2,000 prize money
  • Job offers: BAWAG P.S.K. is looking for employees in the technology sector

VIENNA, Austria - May 06, 2019 – The second hackathon of the Data Science Initiative of the University of Vienna took place from 2 to 4 May at the Start Up & Innovation Hub weXelerate with more than 40 participants. The BAWAG Group was the main sponsor of the tech event and supported the participants from various fields of study.

During the hackathon days, the participants delved into the analysis of synthetic data sets from the banking sector, which were created in cooperation with the Viennese start-up "Mostly AI". Analytical skills and creativity were required to solve the tasks, which had been designed by BAWAG Group experts beforehand. Two challenges had to be solved per data set. The winning teams received a total of € 2,000 prize money. During the hackathon, the young developers could deepen their technical know-how in expert sessions.

"Bank customers already carry out a lot of their daily banking transactions via digital channels. Young developers have a good feeling for user experience topics and provide interesting and new approaches to data analysis. By being present at such events, we also want to be perceived as an attractive employer by young and tech-savvy talents," explains Enver Sirucic, Chief Financial Officer of the BAWAG Group.

The Data Science Initiative was founded in 2016 by students of the University of Vienna to raise awareness for data science in Austria and to inspire young people from various disciplines. Tobias Krause, founder of the Data Science Initiative, explains: "There is a lot going on in the field of data science on an international level. To raise awareness in Austria too, we wanted to create a platform for interested people. We are very proud that the number of registrations for the hackathon has more than doubled in the second year and that students from many different academic backgrounds participated.”

BAWAG P.S.K. currently cooperates with various national and international FinTechs to continuously develop technologies and services for its customers. Furthermore, the bank sponsors hackathons. Last year, BAWAG P.S.K. served as “platinum sponsor” for the F10 FinTech Hackathon, which was organized by the Swiss NPO "F10 Incubator & Accelerator" and which also took place at the Start Up & Innovation Hub weXelerate.

Within its technology group, BAWAG P.S.K. also currently offers a wide range of job opportunities: "We are looking for talents who support us in driving the bank's technological progress," explains Sirucic.
