  • BAWAG P.S.K. gets off to motivated start in fifth year of ES GEHT! initiative
  • Making a difference through digital channels: 70% of donation volume transacted online

VIENNA,5 December 2018 – BAWAG P.S.K. is dedicating today’s “International Volunteer Day” to the civic engagement of the BAWAG P.S.K. customers and employees who have donated a total of EUR 500,000 for social projects over the last four years as part of BAWAG P.S.K.’s ES GEHT! initiative. Launched in 2014, the initiative enables customers and employees to support projects with small donations online, at the branches, or at events. “Austrians not only make generous donations before Christmas, but support projects and ideas they believe in all year round. This impressive donation amount is the result of the great engagement of our customers and our employees. It makes us proud and motivates us to keep going,” said David O‘Leary, a member of BAWAG Group’s Managing Board and head of the BAWAG P.S.K.’s retail business. Seventy percent of the donation amount was collected through BAWAG P.S.K.’s innovative crowdfunding platform, “Austrians who want to donate increasingly use digital channels,” explained O‘Leary.

Doing good deeds online: wins over customers and employees

A closer look at the 2018 donation report released by the Austrian Fundraising Association reveals that 60% of Austrians made donations last year, with an average amount of EUR 113 being spent on social and charitable causes. Since 2014, BAWAG P.S.K. has been concentrating its activities related to charitable donations in the ES GEHT! initiative in order to support people’s ideas, civic courage, and community engagement. One important part of the initiative is the crowdfunding platform In 2014, BAWAG P.S.K. was the first Austrian bank establishing a crowdfunding platform. “We wanted to create an innovative platform in order to showcase projects and ideas and help realize them using crowdfunding. The idea was to make information about social projects accessible with just a few clicks and allow people to donate to them directly,” explained Claudia Lemlihi, head of Marketing Communications at BAWAG P.S.K. and founder of the ES GEHT! initiative. “The platform has been received very well: Over EUR 350,000 were donated online in four years. We are entering into the fifth year highly motivated and with a line-up of fantastic projects,” commented Lemlihi.

Topics such as education and children/youths were very popular among the BAWAG P.S.K. customers and employees who have made donations as part of the ES GEHT! initiative. One of the most successful projects so far was the “Weg mit dem Fleck” initiative with, an online platform for organizing tutoring opportunities. The donations received via the crowdfunding platform and at BAWAG P.S.K.’s branches were used to finance 20 hours of tutoring or the programming of the Android version of the app for 10 pupils per each province of Austria. Among the projects that people can still donate to right now, the initiative “KINDERN.ZUKUNFT.SICHERN” has received the most money, with a total of EUR 25,935 thus far. A significant contribution to the donation amount came from BAWAG P.S.K.’s DANKESCHÖN loyalty program, in which customers and employees receive 1 DANKE point with a value of EUR 1 when they make a cashless payment of EUR 100, for example. The DANKE points can then be used to support projects on the crowdfunding platform.

In addition, BAWAG P.S.K. has been awarding the EUR 3,000 “Mitten im Leben” annual prize for outstanding humanitarian efforts and civic engagement as part of the ES GEHT! initiative since 2014. In 2018, the bank honored the “ich bin aktiv” association, which provides assistance to people with disabilities.
